When you first drive down the meandering mile-and-a-half access road to Kenzo Estate Winery, your eye is drawn first to the beauty of the rolling vineyards and gentle rise of Mt. George beyond. The four simple structures that compose the winery are so deliberately understated as to seem almost secondary. Materials are raw and natural and minimal, and Howard Backen’s elegant design blends in tone and texture with the surrounding landscape. Kenzo Estate—which features wines and wine pairings produced in collaboration with renowned consultants Heidi Barrett, David Abreu and Thomas Keller—represents the culmination of owner Kenzo Tsujimoto’s dream after 20 years of owning this property.
Schmitt & Company was responsible for all site work infrastructure, including coordinating 23,000 square feet of caves and constructing the entire wine production area, which is composed of two fermentation buildings, a storage barn and expansive crush pads.
